Sir Walter Raleigh (1552 – 29 October 1618) was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England. Raleigh was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. The most common date given for the arrival of tobacco in England is 27th July 1589, when it is said Sir Walter Raleigh brought it to England from Virginia. One legend tells of how Sir Walter’s servant, seeing him smoking a pipe for the first time, threw water over him, fearing him to be on fire.
