Sandra Chevrier is a Canadian pop artist based in Montreal, known for her captivating portraits of women. Born in 1983, Chevrier fell in love with art as a child and quickly became a self-taught artist. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). When her son was born, she left her job as a chef in a sushi restaurant to devote her life fully to her son and art.
At first, Sandra Chevrier drew sketches of eyes, calling herself a “collector of looks,” an obsession that is still very visible in her current work. When she paints, the artist begins by drawing the eyes of her female characters, revealing their emotions and sensitivity. She then adds layers of the superhero world to their faces, partially covering their faces like a mask and hiding their feelings and flaws. Initially, Chevrier glued torn comic book pages directly onto the painted portraits, she now paints them with impressive realism. Thus, all of Chevrier’s portraits show a dichotomy between power, fragility, and emotional enigmas.
